Bextra was approved in 2001 as a prescription COX-2, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). On April 7, 2005, the FDA requested that Pfizer suspend sales of Bextra in the United States. The FDA based its decision, in part, on the increased risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes alongside reports of serious and potentially life-threatening skin reactions such as Stevens Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis.
