Bextra was approved in 2001 as a prescription COX-2, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
drug (NSAID). It is used to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid
arthritis in adults and painful menstrual cycles. In preliminary studies, Bextra
was found to increase the incidence of heart attacks and strokes by 2.19 times.
Also it is suspected that the FDA was fully aware of the serious skin-related
side effects that could occur from using the drug. Even so, Bextra was approved.
On April 7, 2005, the FDA requested that Pfizer suspend sales of Bextra in
the United States. The FDA based its decision, in part, on the increased risk
of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes alongside reports
of serious and potentially life-threatening skin reactions such as Stevens Johnson
Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis.
