Bextra is currently the fastest growing COX-2 inhibitor. It is intended to
treat osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis patients with the once-daily medication.
Although an immediate hit, all COX-2 inhibitors, including Bextra, have found
itself surrounded by controversy.
Bextra has been proven to cause acute allergic reactions and skin diseases
in some patients. In rare cases, taking Bextra causes fatal skin reactions such
as toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Pfizer said that
because of these new findings, they will add a black box warning to the Bextra
labeling, warning patients of these serious potential side effects.
In a preliminary study, presented at the American Heart Association meeting
on November 9, 2004, it was revealed that Bextra may cause an increased risk
of heart attack and stroke in patients. Pfizer claims that these findings are
unsupported. Plans are underway to study the effects of Bextra and other COX-2
inhibitors on cardiovascular health by Pfizer and the FDA.
According to the largest COX-2 study to date, COX-2 inhibitors like Bextra
may not be as safe as initially believed. The most concerning and potentially
harmful effects of Bextra are the hints that an increased risk of heart attacks
can occur with its use. While some experts are doubtful that the study will
do little to help end the heart attack controversy, others acknowledge the importance
of it. In order to properly determine if a cardiovascular risk exists when using
Bextra and other COX-2 inhibitors, some experts believe researchers will need
to perform further studies specifically on arthritis patients who already have
coronary heart disease or at high risk of developing it.
