Bextra was FDA approved to treat primary dysmenorrheal, osteoarthritis and
adult rheumatoid arthritis. The company also tried to get Bextra approved for
treatment of acute pain but it was disapproved. The entrance of Cox-2 inhibitors
like Bextra claimed the number of Bextra side effects suffered was less than
the traditional ibuprofen medications or other NSAIDs. Bextra's benefit was
its ability to block just the "bad" Cox-2 prostaglandins and leave
the good prostaglandins present, claiming the same pain-free result as traditional
medications. This would reduce other stomach side effects associated with previous
medications, such as bleeding ulcers.
Bextra side effects were initially marketed to be minimal, creating a natural
lure for patients wishing to seek a pain reliever. However as more evidence
shows, Bextra side effects include extremely serious skin and cardiovascular
complications. Pfizer, the makers of this prescription medication, have known
about various Bextra side effects for years, yet have negligently failed to
take the steps necessary to adequately inform and properly protect consumers
from Bextra risks.
One of the Bextra side effects is Stevens Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal
necrolysis. Stevens Johnson syndrome is a severe inflammatory skin condition
which causes the skin and mucous membranes to erupt. Toxic epidermal necrolysis
is a syndrome in which the skin becomes extremely red, blisters, and peels off
like a second degree burn would.
In addition to skin related Bextra risk factors, studies have also found that
people who take Bextra risk suffering life threatening cardiovascular side effects.
In one study, cardiac bypass surgery patients taking Bextra were two times more
likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke, or similar adverse event compared to
surgery patients in the control group.
Since the discovery of these life threatening Bextra side effects, a "black-boxed"
warning has been added to patient product information. This warning describes
the life threatening skin and cardiovascular Bextra side effects that threaten
patient health.
Regardless of these serious Bextra side effects, Pfizer has failed to protect
their patients. If you have been injured as a result of Bextra, you may wish
